ASES Chosen for Pearl Jam's Carbon Portfolio Strategy
Denver, CO - The American Solar Energy Society (ASES) announced today that it is one of nine organizations selected to take part in rock band Pearl Jam’s Carbon Portfolio Strategy. The Strategy is the newest component of Pearl Jam’s ongoing efforts to promote renewable energy and carbon mitigation. The announcement was made at the 35th annual National Solar Energy Conference – SOLAR 2006 – hosted by ASES this week in Denver. The conference brings together climate scientists, renewable energy experts, architects, and designers working to tackle global warming through the broad application of energy efficiency, construction of green buildings, and expanded deployment of renewable energy technologies. “These funds will help provide wide distribution of the conference summary report, ’Renewable Energy: Key to Climate Recovery,’ which will summarize the perspectives of climate scientists and the potential contributions of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies to greatly reduce U.S. carbon emissions,” said Dr. Chuck Kutscher, SOLAR 2006 Conference Chair. The report will be completed after the conference and will be available at no charge this fall on the ASES website, www.ases.org. “We are honored to participate in Pearl Jam’s efforts and to be collaborating with the other organizations so that we can work toward a more energy-literate and carbon-literate public,” said Brad Collins, ASES Executive Director. “SOLAR 2006 is providing a road map to help us begin to reduce our carbon footprint in substantive ways. The report will help the public, as well as decision makers, understand that we already possess most of the tools needed to tackle global warming and recover from our appetite for fossil fuel.” The national release of the SOLAR 2006 report is scheduled for October. It will present a summary of the impacts various renewable energy technologies can have individually and in aggregate to lessen the nation’s carbon footprint. This new research shows the large potential for mitigating carbon emissions through today’s renewable energy technologies and efficiency improvements. SOLAR 2006 speakers support the notion that serious global warming is due mainly to our use of fossil fuels, and that we must help the public understand that there are known solutions to this problem that are straightforward to implement. The American Solar Energy Society is one of nine organizations chosen for Pearl Jam’s 2006 Carbon Portfolio Strategy. These organizations were selected for their continued work in the fields of clean, renewable energy promotion and carbon emissions reduction. By investing in these organizations, Pearl Jam is actively working to raise the world’s carbon consciousness by supporting organizations at the forefront of environmental awareness and clean energy. In addition to ASES, the other Carbon Portfolio Strategy organizations are Bonneville Environmental Foundation, Cascade Land Conservancy, Conservation International, EarthCorps, Green Empowerment, Honor the Earth, IslandWood, and the Washington Clean Energy Initiative. ASES publishes SOLAR TODAY magazine, organizes the annual National Solar Tour, sponsors the National Solar Energy Conference and advocates for government policy initiatives to promote the research and deployment of renewable energy. ASES has regional and state chapters throughout the country. www.ases.org
