General Information on MREA

SullivanHT.jpg Our Mission
The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) promotes renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable living through education and demonstration.

Our Structure
The MREA is a non-profit 501(C)3 tax exempt organization. The organization was incorporated in March of 1990 in the state of Wisconsin. Donations to the MREA are tax deductible.

Our Activities

  • Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair: Each June the MREA hosts the Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair. This event is the world’s largest renewable energy education event, and offers programs for all ages and knowledge levels. The Fair is powered by working renewable energy systems.
  • ReNew the Earth Institute: The ReNew the Earth Institute is the MREA’s demonstration site and educational facility. The Institute has working renewable energy systems (wind, PV, solar hot water, masonry stove), and educational displays. Visitors to the Institute can take guided and self-guided tours of the facilities and renewable energy systems.
  • Workshops: The MREA hosts a series of educational and hands-on workshops throughout the year. These workshops vary in length from 1 day to 2 weeks. They are instructed by experienced renewable energy experts in small classroom settings and on site installation locations. Workshop participants come from varied backgrounds including homeowners, builders, educators, architects, engineers, and others. The MREA offers over 20 workshops per year. Participants can receive Continue Education Units for attending workshops. Some scholarships are available.
  • Tour of Solar Homes and Businesses: As a chapter of the American Solar Energy Society, the MREA hosts an October tour of homes and businesses throughout Wisconsin. Buildings on the tour demonstrate renewable energy systems, energy efficient construction, and alternative/green building techniques.
  • Newsletter: ReNews is a quarterly newsletter that includes articles on energy issues, book reviews, a calendar of upcoming events, and general information on the MREA and its activities.

    Our Members
The MREA currently has over 3200 active members from around the world representing 39 states and 3 foreign countries. There are a variety of membership levels designed to accommodate different needs and budgets – from students to businesses. Join the MREA today.

    Our Funding
The MREA attempts to maintain a diverse income stream. Funding for our work comes from program fees, grants, donations, and independent contracts. All donations are welcome, and can be earmarked for specific projects.

Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) believes that corporate support is a vital ingredient in promoting its agenda. Even though MREA’s positions or programs are developed internally and are not influenced by our corporate sponsors, our credibility may be questioned by people who perceive such contributions as an expression of mutual endorsement. Our credibility is our most important asset. For that reason MREA has developed a Corporation Donation Policy.

    Corporate Donation Policy
MREA may accept grants and gifts from businesses or corporate foundations when:
The business understands and supports the mission of MREA and offers either general unrestricted support or a restricted gift for a particular priority or priorities.
The contribution shall in no way limit:

    • The actions or policies of MREA, or
    • The ability of MREA to comment or carry out any other organizational activities on a particular project, proposal, policy position, or governmental action.

MREA also receives funding from Focus on Energy , 800-762-7077. Focus on Energy is a public-private partnership offering energy information and services to energy utility customers throughout Wisconsin .
